AWS Launches European Sovereign Cloud Amid Data Security Concerns
Amazon Web Services has unveiled its European Sovereign Cloud, a standalone infrastructure physically and legally segregated from U.S. operations. The MOVE targets growing EU regulatory concerns about data sovereignty and the U.S. Cloud Act's jurisdictional reach.
Headquartered in Brandenburg, Germany, the €7.8 billion project will employ EU citizens and operate through a German legal entity. AWS CTO Michael Hanisch emphasized the system's autonomy—capable of functioning during internet blackouts or U.S. export restrictions.
The launch intensifies competition with Microsoft and Google in the European cloud market, where all three tech giants are deploying region-specific solutions to address stringent data governance requirements.
